HSCE Self Assessment

The Human Services Comprehensive Examination (HSCE) was created to assess a student’s understanding of and ability to apply cited competencies, theories, knowledge, values, ethical standards, and skills. This work is supported by the National Organization for Human Services (NOHS) and is consistent with the standards set by the Council for Standards in Human Service Education (CSHSE).

As a supplement to the formal HSCE, CCE has developed a self-assessment tool that may be used for developmental benchmarking and by individuals for self-assessment of knowledge retention.

This HSCE Self-Assessment is designed to help individuals gauge their retention of critical knowledge. By completing a self-assessment of content knowledge in core areas, individuals will find that they better understand their personal areas of strengths and challenges. This knowledge can help individuals more easily develop a plan for supplementary professional development and training in core content areas that prove more personally challenging. Individuals may find that this self-assessment can serve as a benchmarking tool to ensure they have developed and retained key knowledge necessary for success in the human services field and do not need remedial support prior to progressing into the next phase of their expertise.

The self-assessment is not appropriate for utilization as a credentialing examination because publicly related items are susceptible to broad exposure effects and as such have limited psychometric utility. As such, this self-assessment CANNOT be used to meet the credentialing examination requirement.

Utilization of Self-Assessment

The self-assessment is not appropriate for use as a credentialing examination due to the restricted utility of practice items. These items have been broadly exposed and have limited psychometric data for the items included in this self-assessment. This tool is only made available for the purpose of self-assessment and gauging one’s personal grasp of general content area information.
